Iowa's GED Fact Sheet
- Nearly 8,500 Iowa adult students age 17 or older
completed the GED tests, and 7,996 passed. Nationwide,
945,131 students completed the GED tests, with a national
average pass rate of 69.6 percent.
- "These results clearly demonstrate that Iowa's
community colleges are successful in both reaching and
teaching adult GED level students," said John Hartwig,
Iowa GED State Administrator. "Earning a GED and
learning basic literacy skills are essential for adults
to increase their earnings above poverty level and successfully
compete in the 21st century workforce."
- New data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that
employers in all professional and trade categories need
workers with a minimum high school education, and those
workers will earn an average of $7,000 per year higher than
those without a GED or high school diploma.
- Among Iowa's 7,996 successful GED students, statistics
show:
- 56% were male; 44% were female.
- 24% were minority (compared to 6% minority in Iowa's
adult population).
- Highest average grade completed was 9.9, compared to
the national average of 9.9.
- The average age was 23.7, compared to the national average
of 25.2.
- Iowa's 15 community colleges provide a wide variety
of adult literacy instructional programs to assist adult
learners. In addition to the GED program, adult students
can:
- Become proficient in understanding and speaking English.
- Develop job knowledge and skills.
- Enhance knowledge or skills to maintain employment.
- Gain the education necessary to become effective parents
and full partners in the educational development of
their children.
-
The state's GED success complements Iowa's success
with the statewide adult literacy program. Results in
March showed that Iowa had surpassed nearly all its benchmark
goals mandated for the adult literacy program.
