Coding Clarification for Large School Districts

A question has been raised as to the proper procedure for assigning an Iowa Public School District Code in large school districts which have more than one high school. An example would be Des Moines Independent Community School District which is code "1737". This district has five (5) public high schools (e.g. Roosevelt High School, Lincoln High School, Easter High School, North High School and Roosevelt High School). In this situation the school district code, which would be assigned, is "1737" to represent Des Moines Independent Community School District.

The Iowa Public School District Coding Index only includes the current 2005-2006 school districts but not the individual public buildings located within the district. In the above cited example, Roosevelt High School, Lincoln High School, East High School, North High School and Roosevelt High School are considered to be buildings located within the Des Moines Independent Community School District. Therefore, any GED candidate that last attended one of these five (5) high schools would be coded as "1737" to indicate Des Moines Independent Community School District.
