Helene Grossman is the new Adult Education and Literacy Consultant at the Iowa Dept. of Education. Originally from Brooklyn, NY, Helene is first and foremost, a teacher. She has taught kindergarten through the University level and has shared her knowledge with teachers through her positions with Des Moines Public Schools, Heartland AEA11 and now the DE. She has also been the Conference Coordinator for the Iowa Culture and Language Conference for 22 years. Helene has graduate degrees from Drake University in Secondary School Administration and Adult Training and Development. In 2006, she published a book entitled, Necessary Conversations About English Language Learners: Templates for Success. She is now working on the professional development toolkit to accompany the book.

Helene lives in Urbandale with her husband Howard. She has three children and one wonderful grandson, Sam. In her limited spare time, she loves to spend time with her family, garden and read. Her favorite book is And Ladies of the Club, by Helen Hooven Santmyer because it depicts strong women who come together to learn and support one another.
