  1. Recognizing Word Meanings
    1. Students will develop the ability to interpret word meanings through various methods.
      1. Using context clues
      2. Using visual clues
      3. Using word part clues
    2. Students will develop the ability to use the dictionary
      1. Understanding guide words
      2. Finding the main entry
      3. Deciphering the proper meaning and pronunciation of the word

        Students will learn reading skills by first expanding their vocabulary through various exercises designed to aid in the understanding and memorization of word meanings.

  2. Reading Comprehension
    1. Students will develop comprehension skills by using various reading aids
      1. Prereading skills
      2. Skimming
      3. Previewing selections and parts of books.
    2. Students will learn to read for the main idea
      1. Key ideas in sentences
      2. Topics and main ideas in paragraphs

        Students will better understand what is read by learning to use different reading aids. Different exercises and readings will be used to help recognize the main ideas in various writings which will further aid the students’ comprehension skills.

  3. Interpret and Evaluate
    1. Students will read and perform exercises to develop inference skills
    2. Students will learn to draw conclusions and predict outcomes
    3. Students will learn to evaluate different writings

      Students will develop interpretation skills through reading exercises and writing various articles to be shared.

Basic Reading Skills For Adults 101 was developed to assist adults in becoming better readers through the learning of various reading skills. This class covers the areas of CASAS COMPETENCIES falling under the general heading “Learning to Learn”. The specific areas covered are:

7.1.2, demonstrate an approach to achieving goals;
7.2.1, Identify and paraphrase information;
7.2.4, Identify inferences, distinguishing fact and fiction;
7.2.5, Evaluate a situation; Generate ideas using divergent as well as convergent approaches, and through creative imagination: as well as other principles.
